Recently, we’ve noticed many Ethiopian coffees on the shelves featuring farmers’ names instead of processing or milling stations. We learned that there have been changes to Ethiopia’s export laws, allowing smallholder producers to market their coffees directly.
This coffee is produced by Bekele Belachaw, who owns 6 hectares of coffee in Sagara village in the Bensa district of Sidama. His six children and his wife all work on the farm. Most of the coffees they grow are the 74158 and 74160 varieties from the Jimma Research Centre. These varieties are resistant to diseases and are known for their pronounced citrus and floral notes.
When we cupped this coffee, we instantly fell in love with its citrusy flavors and sugary sweetness. We’ve been craving for a nice Ethiopian coffee and this coffee definitely hits the spot.
