How Much Coffee Is Too Much? (From Someone With ADHD Who Can Sleep After Espresso)

The Beans Hub April 2025 7 min read

I drink coffee... and then I can still fall asleep.

I realised quite early that my relationship with coffee is a bit different from most people.

Back in university, I could have a double shot espresso at 7:30pm, sit down to study, feel focused for a while... and then somehow still fall asleep at 9:30pm like nothing happened.

Meanwhile, my friends would be wide awake until 2am just from one cup.

At first I thought:

maybe my coffee not strong enough?

Turns out... not really.

Does Coffee Hit Everyone the Same?

For most people, coffee gives energy, makes them more alert, sometimes even a bit jittery.

For me, it doesn't always feel like that.

Sometimes it helps me focus.
Sometimes it makes me feel calmer.
And sometimes... it makes me sleepy.

Which sounds quite weird until you understand this:

ADHD brains work a bit differently.

What Does Coffee Actually Do to Your Brain?

Coffee mainly works by affecting certain chemicals in your brain that control:

For most people, it pushes those levels above normal — which is why they feel more awake, more alert, sometimes even too stimulated.

But for someone like me with ADHD, those levels are usually a bit lower to begin with.

So when I drink coffee, it doesn't push me "too high".

It just brings me closer to a normal, balanced state.

Why Can I Drink Coffee and Still Sleep?

This is the part that confuses most people.

If coffee is supposed to wake you up, why can I still fall asleep after drinking it?

From my experience, it's because once my brain finally feels "balanced" and less chaotic, it actually becomes easier to relax.

Less noise.
Less jumping thoughts.
Less restlessness.

And when everything calms down...

I can finally rest.

But Can You Still Drink Too Much Coffee?

Yes. Absolutely.

Just because coffee affects me differently doesn't mean I can drink unlimited amounts.

There are still days where I go overboard — especially when I'm trying to stay productive — and I start to feel it:

So even for me, there is still a limit.

So How Much Coffee Is Too Much?

For most people, around 400mg of caffeine per day is considered okay.

And again, I know this sounds like a random number, so let's translate it.

It's roughly:

And most cafés serve a double shot by default — which means one drink already gives you 2 shots.

So if you're not paying attention, it adds up very quickly.

💡 But here's the important part

Even though I have ADHD, I still don't just blindly follow this number. Because what matters more is: how I feel, not just how much I drink.

Does Drinking Coffee Late Still Affect Your Sleep?

Like I mentioned, I can drink coffee at night and still fall asleep.

But that doesn't mean it has zero effect.

Sometimes I still notice:

So even if I can sleep, it doesn't always mean I should drink coffee late.

What Helped Me Manage Coffee Better

I didn't cut coffee out. I just became more aware of how I use it.

4 things I actually do

1. I use coffee for focus, not just habit

Instead of drinking randomly, I ask myself:

do I actually need it now?

If yes → drink
If not → maybe skip

2. I pay attention to how I feel after

Not all coffees feel the same.

Some make me calm and focused. Some make me slightly uneasy. That tells me a lot.

3. I don't chase more and more

There's a point where more coffee doesn't mean better focus.

It just becomes:

more noise

4. I still respect the basics

Even with ADHD, simple things still matter:

Why Coffee Helps Me (Instead of Making Me Worse)

For me, coffee works because it reduces the constant "mental noise".

It doesn't always make me hyper or energetic.

Sometimes it just makes everything feel... quieter.

And that's when I can:

So How Much Coffee Is Too Much — For Me?

My answer is still the same:

it's too much when it stops helping and starts making things worse.

Even with ADHD, I still look at:

Because those don't lie.

I don't see coffee as something that "gives me energy".

I see it as something that helps me regulate my state.

Sometimes I need more focus. Sometimes I need calm.

Coffee helps — but only when I use it properly.

☕ Final thought

If you're someone who feels like coffee affects you differently, you're not crazy. And if you're just starting out, don't overthink all this. Just: drink, notice, adjust. That's enough.
